Apparently, it’s not really a good thing when your onions “bolt,” or send up a flower stalk. The stalk/flowers/seeds draw energy away from the onion bulb, which is then unable to develop properly into the full, luscious onion that it was destined to be. The bulb is still edible, mind you (if you harvest it soon after flowering), but it’s no loner suitable for storage. My naughty onions, a few of them anyway, have decided to bloom for some reason and I have to say, those blooms sure are pretty!

Other than being pretty, another bonus of onion flowers is that they are reported to be edible themselves. So I tried a couple and found them to be QUITE tasty. They would be delightful in a salad, I think.

Oh, and bees like ‘em too. Making bees happy is always a good thing. :)
