I got up at 4:45am on Friday morning to catch the sunrise in the Windows section of Arches National Park. Driving through Arches before the sun comes up is quite a surreal experience. I made it to the parking lot with plenty of time to spare, donned my hiking boots, gathered up my gear, and proceeded to trudge up the trail, coffee in hand, to the North Window.

It was quite windy and chilly up there and I was just slightly underdressed for the elements. I set up my tripod and camera and settled in for the wait. I had to keep a hand on my tripod at all times lest the wind carry it and my camera down the rocks.

Long story short, the sunrise was a complete bust. Due to the cloud cover, the sun never did bathe Turret Arch in a warm glow as I had hoped it would. Very disappointing, but these things happen.

After that I took a wee hike to Double O Arch:

The sun came out from behind the clouds for just a moment and illuminated this rock formation that’s adjacent to Double Arch (not sure what it’s called):

I took a whole lot more photos as I drove around the rest of the park, but none of them are salvagable due to the lousy light conditions. :( And I couldn’t quite bring myself to get up at 4:45 the following two mornings, so I’ll just have to get my fabulous Arches sunrise images on my next trip to the Moab area.

I don’t know why… I just like it.

There’s nothing quite like standing outside on one’s patio in single digit temps in one’s bare feet to get one’s blood flowing in the morning! But that’s what it took to capture these sunrise images. Brrrr! I love it! :D

I was hoping for another brilliant sunset last night since I got off work a little earlier than the day before and could easily have made a dash to the pond, but the sky and clouds just turned gray and washed out and there was really nothing to it. Instead, I was treated to yet another brilliant sunrise this morning. It’s amazing that colors like this even exist in nature!

I was sitting at my computer moments ago, completely drawing a blank on the blog thing, when I became captivated by the designs of the nearly naked cottonwood tree outside my window against the developing colors of the sunrise. I grabbed the camera and ran outside in my bare feet and captured the following images:

This is one of the more interesting sunrises I’ve photographed. Flying at 37,000 ft. (or thereabouts) between Kuwait and London, clouds above and clouds below. ‘Twas an amazing moment.

For Christmas, I went on a road trip from Denver to Arizona to spend time with family and friends. After spending the first night in Moab, Utah (one of my most favorite places on the planet), I decided to do a sunrise photo shoot in Arches National Park. I arrived at the Windows section parking lot while it was still dark and followed a couple of other crazy photographers up a snow-packed trail and got my tripod and camera set up in front of Turret Arch. The sun took about another hour to make its way over the top of the LaSal Mountains, and when the first rays of the morning sun hit those red rocks, it was like the rocks had suddenly burst into flames. It was an  amazing moment. The photo below was taken 12 minutes later.
